Flotillas
SEA RESCUE WIRRINA: VMR 511
The Wirrina Flotilla was established in response to the need for a volunteer marine search and rescue facility to be established in the area. The Flotilla’s area of responsibility extends from Port Willunga in the north to Kangaroo Island in the south. These are some of the more dangerous waters in the state and we have been involved in a number of serious incidents where our services have saved lives.
Our vessel (call sign Sea Rescue 05) is located at Marina St Vincent, Wirrina and sits on an air dock enabling very quick response time when called for, and is also trailerable to anywhere in the state to assist other Volunteer Marine Rescue units. We provide a 24/7 emergency response.
SEA RESCUE COPPER COAST: vmr 508
Call Sign: Sea Rescue Copper Coast
The Copper Coast Flotilla of the South Australian Sea Rescue Squadron is based at Wallaroo and covers the eastern coast of Spencer Gulf, from Port Broughton in the North, through to Cape Elizabeth in the South. With such a large area to cover, we need to use trailable vessels in order to reach a particular emergency in reasonable time.
SEA RESCUE Edithburgh: vmr 516
Call Sign: Sea Rescue Edithburgh
After a number of years as a community-based sea rescue group, the Edithburgh Flotilla was formally recognised in 2001 as a member of the SA Sea Rescue Squadron. Edithburgh Flotilla’s area of operations extends from Stansbury on the central east coast of Yorke Peninsula to the south west tip of Yorke Peninsula, Cape Spencer west of Marion Bay.
Our members are all highly trained and experienced volunteers and are on call 24/7 to help save lives at sea. Every weekend and public holiday we provide radio monitoring services from our base located at the busy Edithburgh boat ramp as well as a 24/7 service from a volunteer’s home radio base.
Being part of our local community is important to us and we like to get involved by not only providing a search and rescue service, but assisting in local events as well as conducting training courses in radio and seamanship for our community members. We are very grateful for the support provided to us by our community.
